Upward Bound
Sam Keen and members of the Sonoma Trapeze Troupe conduct an Upward Bound program for groups, corporate and otherwise, that want to use the challenging experience of the flying trapeze to explore different styles of dealing with fear, trust, bonding and co-operation.
The flying trapeze provides an ideal environment in which to learn about fear, courage and trust. Placing people in situations of controlled danger where they have an opportunity to confront their fears can transform their lives. Time and again we see people overcome fears, regain trust, become cooperative as they gain the courage to climb the ladder, launch themselves from the platform and leap from the trapeze to the waiting hands of the catcher.
Each group will be given instruction in the basic techniques of trapeze and will perform simple tricks as their athletic skill allows --swinging, knee hangs, bird nests and flying to the catcher. Following the flying sessions, a group discussion will examine how participants dealt with fear, terror and courage and what application this has to their daily lives .
All sessions will be held in a beautiful outdoor setting--under giant oak trees, beside a singing stream-- at Sam Keen's farm. Participants are all required to sign waivers that release all involved personnel and organizations from legal responsibility for any injuries incurred.
Sam Keen ( who initiated the "inward bound" program in Outward Bound) is the host, catcher and co-leader of discussions.
For a sense of the transformations that happen in this setting see Sam Keen’s book and film Learning to Fly.
